What is Immutability?
Crypto Glossary Definition
An object that cannot be changed once it is created, such as a transaction once it has been written to the blockchain.
Why Immutability Matters
Immutability means that once a transaction is confirmed deep enough into a blockchain, it's effectively permanent and cannot be altered or erased — there's no bank to call to reverse a mistaken transfer. This is a core security feature, but it also means user error (like sending funds to the wrong address) usually can't be undone.
